The start of the new year will once again bring seasonal sales across Luxembourg, running from Friday 2 January until Saturday 31 January 2026 inclusive, reaching the maximum one-month duration permitted under Grand-Ducal regulation.

Sales will also take place in Luxembourg’s surrounding areas, including Trier in Germany, Arlon in Belgium, and Thionville and Metz in France.

In Luxembourg the winter sales will start one day earlier than in neighbouring Belgium, where they will begin on Saturday 3 January and also run until Wednesday 31 January 2026. In Germany, including in Trier, retailers set their own January promotions without a fixed national sales period, while in France’s Moselle region, such as in Metz and Thionville, the winter sales will run from Friday 2 January to Thursday 29 January 2026 under a local schedule.

According to the regulation in Luxembourg, traders may use the term “sale(s)” only during the official winter and summer sales periods and only when the reduced price is genuinely lower than the usual selling price. The discount must be clearly displayed, for example as a percentage or a crossed-out original price with the new price shown.

Luxembourg’s VAT rates in 2026 remain unchanged, with the standard rate staying at 17% for most goods and services, alongside reduced rates of 14% and 8% and a super-reduced rate of 3% for certain items..

Compared with previous years, the winter sales in Luxembourg will last longer this time, as they ran only until 25 January in 2025, 2024 and 2023.

The sales period in Luxembourg runs twice a year, in summer and in winter, allowing merchants to deplete their stock and offer products at discounted prices.

The summer sales in Luxembourg will run from Wednesday 24 June to Sunday 19 July 2026 inclusive.
