On Wednesday 26 February 2025, Lidl Luxembourg officially opened its new store in Mersch, "marking a significant milestone in the retailer's expansion" across the Grand Duchy.
According to the brand, the new store offers an enhanced shopping experience with a modernised retail space. "To further streamline the shopping process, the store now features eight self-checkouts, making Mersch the fifth Lidl location in Luxembourg to introduce this service," stated Lidl Luxembourg.
With a sales area expanded to nearly 1,700 m2 from the previous 902 m2 and a parking capacity increased to 127 spaces from 81, the new store "reflects Lidl's commitment to providing greater comfort and choice for its customers." As reported by the organisers, this project is part of the retailer's ongoing efforts to modernise its network in Luxembourg and meet the growing demands for accessibility and sustainability.
Julien Wathieu, spokesperson for Lidl Luxembourg, stated: "We are delighted to welcome our customers to a more spacious and modern store. This relocation allows us to enhance the customer experience while staying true to our commitments to sustainable development."
Lidl Luxembourg emphasised that, as part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts, it remains committed to integrating sustainable solutions into its new infrastructure. The newly opened Mersch store features energy-efficient equipment, including LED lighting and low-consumption refrigeration systems.
In line with its focus on sustainability, the store is designed with high-performance insulation that meets the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) standards. It is also equipped with a heat recovery and rainwater collection system. Additionally, over 1,000 m2 of solar panels have been installed on-site, along with seventeen electric vehicle charging stations.
Beyond its environmental efforts, this new opening also brings local job opportunities, with the recruitment of seven new employees and several student positions, noted supermarket chain Lidl.
Lidl Luxembourg reported that customers at the newly opened Lidl store in Mersch will benefit from an extended product selection, including over 100 Luxembourgish items and an expanded assortment of fresh produce. The total number of available products has increased from 1,900 to 2,450, reflecting the retailer's commitment to offering a wider and higher-quality selection.
Among Lidl Luxembourg's key upcoming projects, the relocation of its Ingeldorf store to a new site in Diekirch is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. The new supermarket will feature an expanded sales area of approximately 1,700 m2 - an increase of 1,100 m2 compared to the current location - and a larger car park with 137 spaces.
