On Thursday 9 October 2025, Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, provided an update on the ongoing rollout programme for its new Coradia trains.
In September 2024 the rollout programme for 34 new trains, built by Spanish company ALSTOM, began and currently fourteen Coradia trains are operating in Luxembourg as single units, offering 334 seats per train. According to the CFL, the remaining next-generation trains will gradually arrive in Luxembourg by the end of 2026.
The first train of the Coradia 2450 series, in a six-car formation (692 seats), is expected to enter service in December 2025. At the same time, the CFL is preparing for the entry into service of the 2400 series Coradia as a multiple unit configuration in mid-October 2025, offering up to 1,002 seats in a single train.
During a visit to the ALSTOM manufacturing plant near Barcelona on Tuesday 7 October, representatives of both companies emphasised the smooth progress of the collaboration, which dates back to December 2018 when the historic order for CFL was signed.
“The success of such a project undeniably relies on our in-house expertise and that of our supplier, but above all on the strong relationship between CFL and ALSTOM,” said Sophie Lacour, Director of Passenger Services at CFL. “For several years, we have nurtured our partnership every day, as new trains enter service, to improve customer service and ensure that rail remains the backbone of mobility in Luxembourg and the Greater Region.”
“The Coradia regional trains, which have won over several railway companies across Europe, contribute daily to making sustainable, modern, and accessible mobility a reality for everyone,” said Bernard Belvaux, Managing Director of ALSTOM Benelux, emphasising that “the collaboration between CFL and ALSTOM is built on trust, performance, and integrity in favour of passengers.”
The CFL noted that the complete Coradia fleet, which represents an investment of €400 million for the company, will provide 46% more seating for its customers and that since 2018 the production of the Coradia trains has involved a project management team of around ten people at CFL.
