On Saturday 27 August 2022, at around 11:00, a part of the rock behind the vault of the “Schieburg” Tunnel between Kautenbach and Wilwerwiltz crumbled over a length of four metres as part of the maintenance work planned for this tunnel, Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, has confirmed.

The incident in question, which took place during the closure of the line, caused no injuries.

All of the work was carried out in strict compliance with the safety measures specific to this type of site. Thus, geological surveys and anchoring aimed at guaranteeing the stability of the surrounding rock were carried out upstream of the work.

Despite this preparatory work, a fall of part of the rock behind the part of the vault affected by the work was observed. In view of this observation, an immediate evacuation of the tunnel was carried out. Studies are underway to determine the reasons behind this incident and analyses are being carried out to allow the work to continue.
