Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has confirmed that the fourth edition of the Summer School, which offers free and optional remedial lessons in public schools at the end of the summer school holidays, is taking place from 4 to 14 September 2023.
The Summer School is an opportunity for students of primary and secondary school levels to refresh their knowledge, consolidate what they have learned during the past school year, fill in knowledge gaps and catch up on course work in their main courses.
This initiative was launched in 2020 to fill the gaps linked to the COVID-19 crisis. In the meantime, it has become one of the tutoring strategies offered by the Luxembourg education system and aims to take into account the heterogeneity of students' needs, contributing to more equal opportunities.
Summer school courses are based on the thematic files developed by the service for the coordination of educational and technological research and innovation (Service de coordination de la recherche et de l’innovation pédagogiques et technologiques - SCRIPT) for each main branch (German, French and basic maths; German, French, English and maths in secondary school) and each class.
These files are accessible on the www.summerschool.lu platform via the student's IAM until 15 September 2023. They also include model answers and can be used independently or accompanied by parents, at any time during school holidays. According to the ministry, these thematic files have been downloaded nearly 24,000 times (data as of 3 September 2023).
In total, 6,266 students registered for the Summer School this year, including 4,940 for the offer of guided activities at primary level and 1,326 for the offer at secondary level. In 2022, the Summer School programme had 5,650 registrations.
The most frequented lessons in primary school education were German lessons, followed by those of mathematics. In secondary education, mathematics courses were the most in demand, followed by French courses.
In primary school education, tutoring is provided by 251 volunteers, including 73 teachers and 178 students (at least baccalaureate holders). Priority was given to recruiting students enrolled in training preparing for the profession of primary school teacher.
In secondary education, students are supervised by 187 volunteers, including 27 teachers and 160 students (at least baccalaureate holders). The students had to first follow an online training course organised by the National Education Training Institute (Institut de Formation de l’Education Nationale - IFEN) and the SCRIPT.
