On 1 February 2018, Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn received his Liechtenstein counterpart Aurelia Frick for a bilateral interview.
As part of a working visit to Luxembourg by Aurelia Frick, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Culture of the Principality of Liechtenstein, Minister Jean Asselborn received his counterpart in the Mansfeld building to discuss bilateral relations.
The two ministers revealed a common desire to maintain and develop political and diplomatic contacts at a high level between the Principality and the Grand Duchy, insisting that sharing the same democratic values offers both countries a vast space collaboration and partnership, which is already having a positive impact, particularly at the level of the UN and the OSCE, with human rights and the rule of law being the main priorities of Liechtenstein. In this context, Ministers Asselborn and Frick discussed, among other things, the International Criminal Court and the activation of the Court's jurisdiction over crimes of aggression. In addition, they highlighted the need for a Code of Conduct for the UN Security Council.
The exchanges of views then made it possible to examine major current European political issues by addressing the Future of Europe and relations between the EU and Liechtenstein, covered in particular by the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement. In this context, both Ministers reaffirmed the importance they attach to respect for the rule of law in Europe. They also reviewed the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union and underlined the need to ensure the integrity of the single market.
Taking stock of the migration issue and the reform work of the Common European Asylum System, Minister Asselborn also praised the efforts of Liechtenstein, which has largely fulfilled its commitments in the context of European efforts to relocate/resettle refugees. Finally, the discussions provided an overview of international political news.
