
On Wednesday 19 March 2025, the Vice President and Minister of Finance of Botswana, Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, visited Luxembourg, where he held bilateral meetings with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, and Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth.
In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade reported that the meeting with Minister Bettel provided an opportunity to explore avenues for strengthening bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Botswana. Discussions included the financial sector and the possibility of strengthening economic exchanges. Minister Bettel highlighted Luxembourg's ongoing commitment to the African continent, stating that in terms of development cooperation policy, Luxembourg asks its partners not to backtrack on fundamental values.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the Russian aggression against Ukraine and regional dynamics in Southern Africa.
The press release added that during the bilateral meeting with Minister Roth, opportunities for closer collaboration between the two countries in the field of financial services were explored. The finance minister emphasised the importance of Luxembourg's financial centre, which plays a key role in international markets and sustainable finance. He also highlighted Luxembourg's efforts to promote innovation and digitalisation in the financial sector. In addition to meetings with members of the Luxembourg government, the Vice President and Minister of Finance of Botswana also held meetings with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Luxembourg House of Financial Technology (LHoFT) and the Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX).
