In Sunday's European elections in Luxembourg, the Democratic Party (DP) won a second seat in the European Parliament, whilst the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) lost one seat.
Luxembourg's elected MEPs for the next five years are Charles Goerens (DP) with 97,445 votes, Christophe Hansen (CSV) with 62,622 votes and Tilly Metz (déi Gréng) with 55,359 votes - all three of which are returning MEPs - as well as newly elected Monica Semedo (DP) with 50,890 votes, Isabel Wiseler-Santos Lima (CSV) with 49,496 votes and Nicolas Schmit (LSAP) with 39,000 votes.
In total, 285,435 eligible voters registered to cast their ballots in Luxembourg on 26 May 2019, compared to the 264,183 who voted in the 2014 European elections.
This year, ten parties submitted six candidates each to run in the elections. With the election of Monica Semedo, the DP has gained one seat at the expense of the CSV, which was previously the largest Luxembourg party at the European level. In total, the DP received 268,910 votes, up 6.67% from the 2014 elections, whilst the CSV dropped 16.55% to 178,944 votes.
The Greens (237,215, +3.9%), the LSAP (152,900, +0.44%), the ADR (125,988, +2.51%) and the Pirate Party (96,579, +3.47%) each gained some votes in comparison to the previous European elections, whilst the Left (60,648, -0.93%) and the Communist Party (14,323, -0.35%) lost votes. The new parties Volt and the Conservatives received 26,483 and 6,652 votes respectively.
As a reminder, in 2014, the CSV secured three seats in the European Parliament, whilst the DP, the LSAP and the Greens filled the remaining three seats (one each). The elected Luxembourg MEPs for 2014-2019 were Viviane Reding (CSV) with 126,888 votes - replaced by Christophe Hansen in 2018 -, Charles Goerens (DP) with 82,975 votes, Claude Turmes (Déi Gréng) with 69,797 votes - replaced by Tilly Metz in 2018 -, Georges Bach (CSV) with 68,242 votes, Frank Engel (CSV) with 65,884 votes and Mady Delvaux-Stehres (LSAP) with 33,323 votes.
In terms of European Parliament groups, the DP belongs to the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), CSV MEPs sit with the European People's Party (EPP), the Greens form part of the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) and the LSAP sit with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D).
