On Sunday 7 August 2016, the Luxembourgish tennis player Gilles Müller won his first match in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Gilles Müller played against Jerzy Janowicz from Poland in the men’s singles, round 1, and won 2-1. He is playing round 2 of the men’s singles today when he is up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

Gilles Müller is considered the best tennis player in the history of Luxembourg. Aged 33 years old, he is currently ranked #37 in the world in men’s singles. He has completed in all four majors and has his best year to date in 2015. He reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2008 when he was eventually defeated by Roger Federer.

In the Davis Cup, Gilles Muller has competed in 30 ties since his first in 2000. He has won 54 matches and has lost just 17, making him the most successful Luxembourgish Davis Cup player.
