The XXXI Olympics are opening in the legendary Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this Friday 5 August 2016; Luxembourg's Minister for Sport, Romain Schneider, will be in attendance.

Over the following days, he will attend various events during the first week of competitions to support the 10 athletes selected by Luxembourg's National Olympic Committee (COSL) to represent the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

More than 11,240 athletes from 206 participating countries, together with a dozen athletes under the status of refugees, will compete over 19 days during the 306 events with medals on offer in the 42 Olympic sports.

Minister Schneider has wished the Luxembourg athletes good luck during this major event in world sport.

- Athletics: Charline Mathias (Women's 800m) - her 1st Olympics

- Cycling: Chantal Hoffmann (Women's road race) - her 1st Olympics

- Cycling: Christine Majerus (Women's road race; women's time trial) - her 2nd Olympics

- Cycling: Frank Schleck (Men's Road Race) - his 3rd Olympics

- Swimming: Laurent Carnol (Men's 100m Breaststroke; Men's 200m Breaststroke) - his 3rd Olympics

- Swimming: Julie Meynen (Women's 50m Freestyle, Women's 100m Freestyle) - her 1st Olympics

- Swimming: Raphael Stacchiotti (Men's 100m Freestyle, Men's 4x100 Individual Medley, Men's 4x100 Individual Medley) - his 3rd Olympics

- Table-Tennis: Ni Xia Lian (Women's Singles) - her 4th Olympics

- Tennis: Gilles Muller (Men's Singles) - his 2nd Olympics
