On Wednesday 11 February 2026, the Automobile Club of Luxembourg (ACL) published safety advice ahead of the Carnival holidays to avoid stress and unnecessary incidents.
According to the ACL, many drivers from Luxembourg traditionally set off for ski resorts during this period. In this context, the organisation has issued seven recommendations:
1. Check the vehicle before departure: a quick check of tyre pressure, tread, lighting, battery and fluid levels reduces the risk of breakdowns on long journeys.
2. Winter tyres remain the safest choice in the mountains: even though all-season tyres with the alpine symbol are permitted, real winter tyres offer significantly better grip on snow and ice thanks to their special rubber compound and numerous sipes. Especially on steep terrain, an all-season tyre loses traction more quickly in winter conditions. Snow chains and classic winter equipment should also be carried.
3. Secure skis and luggage correctly: roof boxes, ski racks and loose items should be checked again before departure to ensure that they do not pose a safety risk even during emergency braking.
4. Plan route, traffic and travel time: at the start of the holidays, expect increased traffic on main routes towards the Alps. A look at the weather forecast, traffic situation and alternative departure times can save a lot of time and nerves.
5. Keep an eye on energy costs and charging supply along the way: anyone traveling with a combustion engine should check current fuel prices along the route. Electric car travellers should make sure before departure that charging cards or apps work and that enough charging points are available along the route. In addition, asking the hotel or accommodation in advance about charging options at the destination may be useful.
6. Do not forget the vignette: for trips through Austria and Switzerland, drivers must hold a valid motorway vignette. Drivers can also purchase adhesive vignettes while travelling in border regions, but to avoid unnecessary waiting times at border crossings, they should buy them before departure, for example at the ACL shops in Bertrange or Ingeldorf. Drivers should purchase digital vignettes only via the official provider websites (for Austria: www.asfinag.at; for Switzerland: via.admin.ch).
7. Bonus tip: be well protected on the road. If something goes wrong despite good preparation, ACL membership may be helpful in the event of a breakdown and ensuring that travellers get home safely again.
