On Friday 18Ocober 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, the Road Safety ASBL and the Saint-Hubert Federation of Hunters of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg ASBL launched an awareness campaign during the hunting season.
The campaign aims to raise awareness among all road users of the importance of being extra vigilant during the driven hunting season, which runs from 19 October to 31 January 2024 throughout the country.
During this period, motorists are advised to be particularly attentive near roads, especially in wooded areas or when a sign indicates a risk of wild animals crossing. Everyone is asked to adapt their speed according to the circumstances.
When a sign indicating "be careful" is located at the side of the road, it is essential to reduce speed, so that game or a dog can cross the road at any time.
In the event of an encounter with a wild animal on the road, here are the instructions to follow:
- Reduce speed, turn on dipped headlights, while keeping in mind that the light intensity can disturb animals and other drivers.
- Motorists should also remember that wild animals often travel in groups. If a collision with an animal is unavoidable, it is advisable not to try to avoid it, but rather to: Hold the steering wheel firmly, Stay in a straight line, Brake urgently.
In the event of an accident involving an animal, it is essential to follow these steps:
- Wear a safety vest before getting out of the vehicle,
- Turn on the hazard lights,
- Secure the area of the accident,
- Inform the police.
It is strongly recommended for embers of the public not to touch or move the animal, whether it is injured or dead. The police will take charge of the situation or contact the relevant services.
Furthermore, walkers are advised to avoid the areas concerned during the hunting season for obvious safety reasons.
