The City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) has announced that the Knuedler underground car park in Luxembourg-Ville will partially reopen from Monday 28 November 2022.

The partial reopening of the renovated car park will take place in two consecutive phases.

Phase 1: From Monday 28 November 2022, levels -3 and -2 of the new annex, with a total of 136 parking spots, will be open to the public and will be added to the 216 spots on levels -3 and -2 of the old part of the car park, which has already been partially renovated and made accessible. A total of 352 parking spots will be available to customers, including some 150 spots reserved for hourly customers. The opening of this part of the extension is accompanied by the temporary closure of levels -1 and 0 of the old part of the car park, which will in turn be renovated and modernised.

Phase 2: According to the commitment of the general contractor, levels -4 and -5 of the new part of the car park will then open to the public from Thursday 22 December 2022. The opening of these two levels will involve the closure of level -2 in the old part, which will also be subject to renovations, from January 2023. The parking capacity of the Knuedler car park will then be 383 spots, including some 180 spots reserved for hourly customers.

The VdL noted that certain finishes and provisional arrangements will be completed in the course of the following months.

Background

The creation of an extension with an area of 38 x 50 metres over five floors is aimed at creating 343 spots for a total of 749 parking spots in the entire car park once the works are completed; this includes eighteen spots for electric cars, eleven spots for women and families and thirteen spots for people with reduced mobility. The number of spots available in the old part of the Knuedler car park will decrease from 483 to 406 spots due to an enlargement of the parking spots.

According to the VdL, the renovation of the existing car park aims, among other things, to bring it into line with current safety standards, to carry out a complete replacement of the technical installations, to widen the parking spots, to set up a system indicating the availability of each spot (red/green light) as well as an internal dynamic display indicating the number of free spots per floor. In addition, a new signage charter developed for the VdL's car parks will make it possible to clearly differentiate between the different types of visitors (cars, pedestrians, families, subscribers, etc.).

The complete reopening of the Knuedler underground car park is planned for 2023.
