On Thursday 3 April 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry for Mobility and Public Works reported that Pony.ai Europe SARL recently received authorisation to carry out scientific tests of autonomous vehicles.

One week earlier, on Thursday 27 March 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, officially granted Pony.ai Europe SARL the first ministerial authorisation to carry out these tests, under human supervision, on public roads in Luxembourg. Pony.ai will conduct these scientific trials in partnership with the Luxembourg-based company Voyages Emile Weber.

The ministry said it provides authorisation, for a one-year period from Friday 28 March 2025, for Pony.ai to operate within the limits of the municipality of Lenningen. During their time on public roads, the three vehicles involved in the project must display a visible “scientific test” sign. Additionally, duly trained individuals must occupy the vehicles at all times to supervise the trials.

After granting the ministerial authorisation, Minister Backes stated: “The granting of this authorisation marks an important milestone for the future of mobility. Autonomous driving is a major innovation that has the potential to transform our daily lives. The government is pleased to support companies like Pony.ai in their pursuit of new technologies and is committed to backing initiatives that aim to make mobility safer and more efficient.”

Pony.ai is an autonomous vehicle technology company whose goal is to commercialise the technology for use in both public and private transport services.
