Luxembourg's Prison Administration has announced a partial lockdown at the Centre pénitentiaire de Luxembourg (CPL), otherwise known as Schrassig Prison.

Following an increase in COVID-19 infections at the penitentiary, the Prison Administration has decided, in consultation with Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice, to impose a partial lockdown at Scrassig Prison.

In order to avoid possible sources of infection, inmates' contact with the outside world has been further limited. However, family visits are still allowed.

These new sanitary measures are applicable for a period of fourteen days.

Currently, fifteen inmates from different detention sections are infected with COVID-19. According to the medical service, all of those concerned are asymptomatic or have only very mild symptoms. From the discovery of the infection, these inmates are placed in a section reserved for positive coronavirus cases for a period of at least ten days. All detainees in contact with an infected individual have been quarantined and given the opportunity to carry out a PCR test.

In addition, the use of rapid antigen tests will be systematised to better guarantee health security. Large scale testing for staff and inmates is also set to take place soon.

The Prison Administration assured that the health situation at Schrassig Prison remains under control and that sufficient operational reserves are available in the event that the situation worsens. The Prison Administration and the medical service within the prison are monitoring the development of the situation very closely and on an ongoing basis. They noted that it was not possible to comment on the development of the situation at present.
