In its latest COVID-19 report, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health confirmed that the majority of recent COVID-19 infections were linked to household transmission.
For the week of 28 September to 4 October 2020, the number of residents testing positive for COVID-19 was up 19% with 549 people compared to 460 the previous week. The number of contacts remained at a high stable level with 4,619 compared to 4,666 contacts (-1%) during the same period. The number of PCR tests carried out on residents was 38,647 compared to 36,887 for the previous week.
As of Sunday 4 October 2020, the number of active infections stood at 1,005 (compared to 1,122 as of 27 September) and the number of people having recovered from the illness increased from 7,129 to 7,793. Hospital capacities were more in demand than during the previous week, with two new deaths related to COVID-19.
The effective reproduction rate (RT eff) increased from 0.77 to 1.12 and the positivity rate on the tests carried out was 1.42% compared to 1.24% (weekly average) the previous week. The seven-day incidence rate was 87.68 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The average age of people diagnosed with COVID-19 increased slightly to 37.6 years.
Last week, 1,498 people were in quarantine (down 39% compared to the previous week) whilst 1,091 were in isolation (unchanged).
Regarding sources of infection, 25% of new cases were related to household transmission, whilst 13% of cases were linked to travel abroad. In addition, 8% of cases were related to the professional environment, 7% to the education sector, 5% to the assistance and care sector, 3% to shared accommodation, 2% to parties with family or friends and 1% to organised leisure activities.
