In its latest COVID-19 report, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health confirmed that the number of new infections linked to travel abroad remained the main source of COVID-19 transmission.
Of the 281 positive cases recorded between 31 August and 6 September 2020, 126 were linked to travellers returning to Luxembourg from abroad. Although down slightly (52% to 45%) compared to the week before, this remained the main cause of infection in the Grand Duchy. The Ministry of Health thus reiterated the importance of respecting health measures even during holidays abroad, in order to limit the spread of coronavirus.
In addition, 57 cases (20%) were most likely linked to household transmission (within families), whilst five cases (2%) were linked to celebrations with family or friends. Fourteen cases concerned four groups of previously identified active infections (at work, leisure activities, the hospitality sector).h
In any case, the number of residents testing positive for COVID-19 last week remained virtually unchanged, with 281 people compared to 288 the previous week. The number of PCR tests performed on residents amounted to 47,868.
As of Sunday 6 September 2020, the number of active infections stood at 580 (compared to 572 as of 30 August) and the number of people having recovered from the virus increased from 5,983 to 6,256. Hospital capacity was even less strained than during the previous week and there were no new reported deaths related to the virus.
The effective reproduction rate (RT eff) fell from 1.06 to 1.02 and the positivity rate on the tests performed was 0.59% compared to 0.76% (week average) the previous week. The seven-day incidence rate was 44.88 per 100,000 inhabitants.
For the week of 31 August to 6 September, the average age of people diagnosed with COVID-19 was 31.1 years old - a decrease compared to previous weeks.
During this period, 1,510 people were in quarantine and 584 in isolation.
