In its latest COVID-19 report, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health confirmed that the number of new infections linked to travel abroad increased further last week, rising from 47% to 52% of cases.
Of the 288 positive cases recorded between 24 and 30 August 2020, 150 (52%) were linked to travellers returning to Luxembourg from abroad. The Ministry of Health thus reiterated the importance of respecting health measures even during holidays abroad, in order to limit the spread of coronavirus.
In addition, 64 cases (22%) are believed to have been intra-family infections, whilst six cases (2%) were linked to celebrations with family or friends. A further eight cases related to two groups of previously identified active infections (at work, flat-sharing, etc.).
Last week, the number of residents testing positive for COVID-19 remained virtually unchanged, with 288 people compared to 292 the previous week. On the other hand, the number of identified contacts increased significantly, from 1,569 to 2,195 (an increase of 52%), mainly due to residents returning home from holiday.
As of 30 August 2020, the number of active infections stood at 570 (compared to 482 on 23 August) and the number of people having recovered from the virus increased from 5,784 to 5,984. Hospital capacities were less strained than during the previous week and no new deaths related to COVID-19 were reported.
The effective reproduction rate (RT eff) went from 1.080 to 1.090 while the positivity rate on the tests carried out remained stable at 0.76%, compared to 0.74% the week before (average for the week). The seven-day incidence rate was 46 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The average age of people diagnosed with COVID-19 last week was 35, thus remaining stable compared to previous weeks.
For the week of 24 to 30 August 2020, 1,487 people were in quarantine and 543 in isolation.
