Webasto Luxembourg has announced the launch of the new high-tech glass production line at its plant in Grevenmacher, Luxembourg.
The official inauguration on Saturday 21 September 2024 was attended by Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, and the Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, among others.
The manufacturer said it was investing in a customised glass production line to significantly increase the plant's production capacity for roof glazing. The strategic product focus here is on large-format panoramic glass roofs and pioneering technologies such as switchable glazing and ambient lighting.
The expansion of production capacity includes the addition of approximately 13,000 m2 of manufacturing space and the integration of state-of-the-art technologies. The new facilities not only increase production efficiency and capacity, but also enable significant energy savings, according to the manufacturer. Webasto added that it was using this opportunity to further modernise production and to manufacture larger glass roof systems for passenger cars of the highest quality.
Another key element of this investment is the installation of a photovoltaic system on the roof of the plant, which has an output of 4.5 megawatts peak (MWp) and produces approximately 3.95 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This is enough to meet the needs of about 1,000 households, reported Webasto. With a surface area of around 20,000 m2 (the equivalent of three football fields), the system reportedly makes a significant contribution to reducing electricity consumption and increasing energy efficiency.
"By investing in one of the world's most modern production lines for high-tech glass, Webasto is further expanding its innovative strength in the field of roof systems," explained Jan Henning Mehlfeldt, Member of the Management Board at Webasto. "Our plant in Grevenmacher is now optimally positioned to meet the growing demand for roof systems with high-tech glass in the automotive industry."
Webasto reported that the investment in the site will create over 60 new jobs.
The production facility in Grevenmacher has existed since 1992 and has been part of the Webasto Group since 2022.
