Luxembourg-based steel and mining company ArcelorMittal today reported that it has contributed over 5,000 tonnes of 42-to-52-grade rod for the construction of a 51,000-capacity football stadium in Mexico.

Home to professional football team FC Monterrey, the new BBVA Bancomer Stadium in Monterrey, Mexico features foundations, columns, stairs, beams and slabs forged with ArcelorMittal Steel. The Mexico branch of the steel company has been involved in the design, proposal and supply of new value-added products for the last six years, with the rod selected for the project providing cost savings of 8% and up to 15% in CO2 emission reductions.

"Our involvement in this iconic project illustrates how we use innovative thinking to attract high-quality projects - and to strengthen our leadership position across international and domestic steel markets," commented Ángel Herrera, new products manager at ArcelorMittal Mexico. "ArcelorMittal remains the leading developer of new steel products in Mexico. Thanks to new developments, during the last six years with grade 52 rod, and today with our newest 56-grade welding rod, we have the safest and most sustainable products in the country with compelling cost savings, high resistance, and higher ductility. These products are the result of collaboration across our production, quality, sales and distribution teams".

The BBVA Bancomer Stadium joins other global stadiums including Wembley Stadium and the new Yankee Stadium in being the creation of Populous, which joined forces with VFO Architects and the stadium's infrastructure builders SOCSA and GP Construcción (formerly Constructora Garza Ponce).

Inspired by steel manufacturing in its home city, the stadium boasts an asymmetrical design framing the Cerro de la Silla Mountain, south of Monterrey. With 324 suites, 4,500 club seats and lounges offering luxury food, beverages and seating options, the venue is considered the most modern sporting stadium in Latin America.

The stadium was inaugurated by Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on 31 July 2015, and hosted its first game two days later, when those present experienced home team FC Monterrey beat Portuguese club Benfica by three goals.
