Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy and the national statistics institute, STATEC, have announced the appointment of Tom Haas as STATEC's new director.
During its meeting of Wednesday 11 September 2024, the Government Council (Cabinet) endorsed the proposal of Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, to appoint Tom Haas as Director of STATEC, with effect from 1 November 2024. Tom Haas will replace Serge Allegrezza, who will retire at the end of October 2024.
41-year-old Tom Haas has fifteen years of experience with the institute, particularly in the field of analysis and synthesis. He successively held the positions of research officer in the "Studies, forecasts and research" unit, then in the "Modelling and forecasts" unit, before being appointed head of the "Modelling and forecasts" unit in 2020. Since 2023, he has been head of the "Economic situation, modelling and forecasts" department and joined the STATEC management committee. In this capacity, he represented STATEC in various institutions and in meetings at national and international levels.
With a master's degree in modelling and econometrics from the University of Montpellier, Tom Haas completed his training with an economist-statistician diploma from ENSAE Paris as well as a master's degree in international economics from the University of Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne.
As an administration boasting scientific and professional independence, placed under the authority of the Ministry of the Economy, STATEC produces statistics, studies and analyses and disseminates this data. With more than 220 employees, STATEC coordinates the national statistical system and represents it at the international level.
Commented on the appointment, Minister Delles said: "Our economy is facing many challenges in the short, medium and long term, between maintaining our competitiveness, the necessary acceleration of the energy transition or the ageing of the population. As the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, STATEC plays a key role in drawing up a detailed, reliable and objective image of Luxembourg society that helps decision-makers make informed choices to meet these challenges. With extensive experience within STATEC, Tom Haas has expertise and knowledge that are recognised both internally and externally. He has participated in many innovative projects that have contributed to the strategic development of the institute in recent years. He has thus proven to be the best choice to take over from Serge Allegrezza and assume the role of Director of STATEC, while preserving its independence. I wish him good luck in his new role and I hope Serge Allegrezza enjoys his retirement."
Tom Haas commented: "I am honoured to be appointed Director of STATEC and I look forward to putting my professional experience and enthusiasm to the service of an organisation that I know in depth. In recent years, I have seen the STATEC teams demonstrate great adaptability in the face of multiple challenges. STATEC must be responsive, proactive and innovative to help citizens and decision-makers make informed choices."
The Economy Ministry and STATEC recalled that the latter's teams will move to the Twist building in Esch-Belval in October 2024; an official inauguration ceremony is planned for 20 September 2024.
