On Tuesday 20 June 2023, Luxembourg's employment agency ADEM reported that the number of resident jobseekers available for work as of 31 May 2023 stood at 15,188; the unemployment rate reached 5%.

The number of available resident jobseekers registered with ADEM at the end of May 2023 (i.e. 15,188 jobseekers) represented an increase of 1,242 people (+8.9%) over one year. This increase applied to all periods of unemployment, except for people registered with ADEM for more than twelve months.

The unemployment rate, adjusted for seasonal variations, calculated by STATEC, thus increased to 5% (up from 4.9% the previous month).

The number of new jobseeker registrations was on the rise: 2,227 residents registered with ADEM in May 2023, an increase of 87 people (+4.1%) compared to May 2022. Among these figures were 64 registrations from beneficiaries of temporary protection (i.e. refugees from Ukraine).

The number of resident jobseekers receiving full unemployment benefit increased by 1,148 people (+16.6%) over one year, to 8,073.

The number of beneficiaries of an employment measure stood at 4,241 and remained below the level observed in May 2022 (a decrease of 290 people or 6.4%).

During the month of May 2023, employers declared 3,528 vacancies to ADEM, which corresponds to a decrease of 26.7% compared to May 2022. ADEM noted that this decline concerned all sectors of activity, with the exception of manufacturing, trade, transport, storage and education. The total number of available positions stood at 9,686 at the end of May 2023, i.e. a decrease of 26.9% over one year.
