According to ADEM, Luxembourg's unemployment agency, as at 31 May 2021, the number of resident job seekers available for work stood at 17,340; over one year, this represents a decrease of 2,869 people, or 14.2%.
The unemployment rate, adjusted for seasonal variations, calculated by STATEC, amounts to 5.9% and therefore continues to decline compared to previous months.
Employment Measures
In May 2021, 1,881 residents registered with ADEM, an increase of 206 people or 12.3% per compared to May 2020.
The number of resident job seekers assigned to an employment measure stood at 4,562 as of 31 May 2021. Over one year, this constitutes an increase of 733 people, or 19.1%.
Cross-border Workers
The number of job seekers who do not reside in Luxembourg and who, at the date of the statistical statement, are neither in employment, nor assigned to an employment measure and nor on sick or maternity leave, was 2,845 as of 31 May 2021. Over one year, this constitutes a decrease of 536 people, or 15.9%.
Employment Benefit
A total of 9,570 people received full unemployment benefit, including 9,073 residents. Over one year, this represents a decrease of 1,061 people, or 10.0%. 2,976 people received a waiting allowance / professional waiting allowance. Over one year, this represents a drop of 150 people, or 4.8%.
Open Positions
During the month of May 2021, 3,961 vacant positions were declared to ADEM by the various employers. Over one year, this constitutes an increase of 73.9%. 77.2% of the positions concern fixed-term or indefinite employment contracts, 12.7% are temporary work assignments and 10.1% are employment measures.
On the last day of May 2021, a total of 8,865 vacant positions appear in ADEM's files. Over one year, this constitutes an increase of 56.4%.
Over one year, the number of available positions has increased by 56.4%. Indicators on job vacancies are reaching or even exceeding pre-health crisis levels. A recovery is emerging in HORECA professions: 365 jobs were declared during the month of May, as many as in May 2019 and the number of jobs available in this sector stood at 537 as of 31 May 2021.
