Amazon has announced that it is planning to create 600 new jobs in Luxembourg this year.
The multinational technology company currently (at the start of 2021) employs 3,000 people in Luxembourg, where its European headquarters are located. This number is expected to increase by 20% to 3,600 by the end of 2021.
“We will add another 600 employees in Luxembourg by the end of the year, and we’re now one of the country’s biggest employers", confirmed Amazon’s Vice President for EU Retail, Jorrit Van der Meulen. "I have been in Luxembourg since 2011 and consider the country to be my home. I am proud and excited by the fact that we have grown from fewer than 300 people when I arrived to more than 3,000 today".
Amazon has invested over €78 billion in Europe since 2010. Much of this investment has been in infrastructure and research, leading to the creation of thousands of new jobs, generating significant local tax revenue and supporting small European firms with programmes like Fulfilment by Amazon. The company now has 60 fulfillment centres, over 100 corporate offices and development centres and more than 135,000 full-time employees across Europe in a variety of roles.
In terms of supporting local communities, a team of Amazon logistics experts in Luxembourg collaborated with the Robert Schuman Hospital last year to source critical materials during the pandemic. Most recently, the company's Luxembourg teams helped coordinate much of its response to the situation in India, using Amazon's global logistics network across Europe to purchase, airlift and deliver critical medical equipment to support employees and communities amid the devastating impact of the pandemic.
