On Friday 16 October 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Finance reported on the participation of Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, in the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from Tuesday 13 to Friday 16 October in Bangkok, Thailand.
The ministry said that against a global backdrop marked by persistent uncertainty and sustained inflationary pressures, finance ministers, central bank governors and heads of international institutions exchanged views on the structural challenges facing the global economy and public finances. Discussions highlighted the need to mobilise more private capital, pursue structural reforms and ensure public debt sustainability in order to support growth that is both inclusive and sustainable. They also addressed issues relating to financial stability, the fight against money laundering and corruption, and strengthening resilience in the face of climate, energy and economic challenges.
Strategic Meetings to Strengthen International Ties
According to the ministry, on the sidelines of the meetings, Minister Roth held bilateral talks with his counterparts from Thailand, India, Oman, Liechtenstein and Malaysia, as well as with a delegation from Togo.
During his meeting with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Minister Roth signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation and deepening ties between the financial sectors of the two countries.
Minister Roth also met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and the new Director of the European Department, Mateusz Szczurek. Their discussions focused on the global and European economic outlook, as well as the main challenges arising from the current international environment.
As part of the annual meetings, he also took part in a ministerial roundtable on Ukraine, reaffirming continued support for the country and the commitment of international partners to its stability, resilience and reconstruction.
In addition, Minister Roth met with Masato Kanda, President of the Asian Development Bank. Their discussions focused on regional economic prospects and Luxembourg’s role, as an international financial centre, in mobilising capital to support sustainable, resilient and inclusive growth.
Minister Roth attended the launch of the thematic Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Corruption Fund (AMLAC), which aims to help member countries strengthen financial integrity, improve institutional governance and mitigate macroeconomic risks.
“The annual meetings of the IMF and the World Bank have once again demonstrated the value of multilateralism and collective action in addressing global challenges. Luxembourg will continue to champion an international order based on clear rules, while affirming its role as a committed partner and consolidating its position as a leading financial centre that is innovative, open and forward-looking,” stated Minister Roth.
Moreover, Minister Roth took advantage of his visit to Thailand to promote Luxembourg’s financial centre among key players in the local economy.
