Facilitec, a "third place" incubator in Esch-sur-Alzette, has announced that it will soon host a new meeting place for curious do-it-yourselfers, repairers, makers and other creative types: the FabLab Cyber'n'Ethique.

Back in September 2020. Sébastien Kanarek, a project leader with solid experience in digital technology, education and the development of local projects, discovered Facilitec. After several discussions, the idea of investing in the ground floor of Facilitec emerged and a new FabLab (digital fabrication laboratory) would be born. And not just any FabLab, but an associative FabLab anchored in the circular economy and civic engagement.

Beyond the technological developments enabled by the FabLab, the notions of empowerment and digital independence of the public are major objectives of Cyber’n’Ethique. Its levers are creativity and innovation.

In addition to the digital and design tools of the FabLab, the Facilitec workshop will keep its vocation related to wood and daily DIY with the tools made available. Repair and creation will then be possible through a large number of techniques and associations of media and knowledge. T

The FabLab Cyber’n’Ethique will regularly offer time for discussion, information or training in connection with digital citizenship education. These actions will target the entire population and the programme will be built collectively with the users (depending on the issues identified, the situations proposed, current events, etc.) mainly on themes related to the use of digital technology in the context of a circular economy.

Caroline Holz, Facilitec coordinator, commented: "This FabLab makes it possible to affirm the openness of Facilitec to the inhabitants of Esch[-sur-Alzette] in a fun and practical way, to federate a large community where everyone can give and receive".

Sébastien Kanarek added: "In order to build a circular economy favoring the reuse and limitation of waste, it is necessary to create places that provide the public with self-production, transformation and repair services. The FabLab is a tool adapted to this vision of things".

Just as Facilitec was built and defined with the help of its users, Cyber’n’Ethique will be built with collective intelligence, which is part of the DNA of third places. The idea will be to establish the rules of operation, use and access with the community to be born around the project. A charter and an "instruction manual" will thus be co-created.

Cyber’n’Ethique will host thematic workshops co-programmed from May or June 2021, if the health situation permits.

Further information will be provided during a meeting on Wednesday 20 April 2021 at 18:00. Registration is required via email: facilitec@cell.lu.

Cyber’n’Ethique is a FabLab under construction, focused on the circular and shared economy, repair, independence in the face of digital technology and education. Makers, creatives or anyone who is simply curious, and who wants to take part and co-construct this project, is invited to make their contribution by contacting the FabLab team at Facilitec at the above email address.
