Compellioa, a Luxembourg-based software company offering novel digitalisation solutions, and Guala Closures Group have joined forces to launch CapChain, a research and development project that aspires to drive blockchain innovation in the wine & spirits market, leveraging on a combination of smart packaging caps, developed by Guala Closures, and Compellio’s blockchain middleware solution, called the Compellio Registry.

CapChain will enable brands to introduce digital interaction technologies into their products with the use of IoT and data exchange services. In this way, brands will be able to tackle product counterfeiting, present rich product information to consumers, target market segments more effectively, as well as offer new customer engagement opportunities including personalised loyalty programmes.

Recognising the transformative potential of the CapChain project, Luxembourg's Ministry of Economy has provided Compellio with a three-year grant worth €600,000 to implement the project. Compellio, with the support of Luxinnovation, has now solid financial support to perform cutting-edge research, create new knowledge, and deliver new software applications globally.

Denis Avrilionis, CEO of Compellio said: “At Compellio, we are excited to drive blockchain innovation across several industries. Together with Guala Closures, the global market leader of closures, we aspire to accelerate digitalisation in the wine and spirits industry. The CapChain project is the fruit of this collaboration and it will allow us to explore new ways for people to interact with products using blockchain-enabled technologies. We are grateful for the public grant provided to us by the state of Luxembourg and we look forward to utilizing it in order to develop a leadership position globally.”

Piero Cavigliasso, Group Technology Innovation Director of Guala Closures Group said: “We are excited to start this project which seeks to combine our NěSTGATE connected closures technology with Compellio’s blockchain-enabled technology. Our connected caps – based on NFC or QR code technologies developed in our R&D centre in Luxembourg - will ideally help food & drinks, as well as pharmaceutical producers around the world to promote their brands and protect them with an eclectic solution, able to bring immediate business advantages”.
