The Luxembourgish scientific community, the national government and NVIDIA today announced the creation of a joint artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory in Luxembourg.

This AI cooperation between the Grand Duchy and NVIDIA, a first in Europe, is an important milestone towards collaboration in finding solutions to society's biggest challenges  through artificial intelligence and high performance computing. The partnership follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NVIDIA and the Luxembourg Government signed on 5 July 2018.

The joint AI research laboratory, which is set up under the Digital Luxembourg government initiative, will promote research in various fields. It will allow close collaboration between different members of the Luxembourgish scientific community and NVIDIA, a company employing some of the best computer scientists in the world.

NVIDIA, the High Performance Computing Centre of the University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) ) initially committed to appoint a team of six to work on joint projects. The AI lab will work closely with NVIDIA's global AI research approach and will be supported by a joint advisory board. Each institution will have greater access to NVIDIA's advanced hardware and software to address the most complex research issues.

Digital Luxembourg has launched this project with the aim of generating new resources for the Luxembourg environment for innovation and research, thus pursuing the government's ambition to foster collaboration and innovative initiatives.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel commented that "our country is proud to be the first European country to establish an AI partnership with NVIDIA."

In parallel with the creation of the joint AI laboratory and on the basis of the MoU with NVIDIA, Digital Luxembourg will support the setting up of AI training courses for innovation and research actors in Luxembourg, but also for industry and individuals.
