On Friday 4 April 2025, the LCGB trade union released a statement acknowledging Luxembourg's trial of autonomous vehicles but stressed concerns about its impact on transport sector employees.

The LCGB, the majority trade union in the transport sector, reported: “While this technological advancement may represent an opportunity for mobility, it also raises significant concerns about the future of transport sector employees.”

In its statement, the LCGB detailed a number of concerns.

In relation to employment and working conditions, the trade union noted that “the introduction of autonomous vehicles brings major questions regarding the future of professional drivers. The LCGB fears that this technology could lead to a significant reduction in jobs, jeopardising the economic stability of many workers and their families.” It added: “The shift towards such technology requires careful consideration of professional retraining and continuous education for affected employees.”

The LCGB also called for dialogue from all parties, urging that “the government and the companies involved immediately initiate an inclusive social dialogue in order to anticipate and manage the consequences of automation in the transport sector.” It stressed: “It is essential to implement proactive measures now to protect jobs, such as training and retraining programmes, as well as guarantees to preserve working conditions and social benefits, in order to avoid increasing job insecurity for affected workers in the future.”

Moreover, the LCGB called for the implementation of “clear regulation” in relation to the use of autonomous vehicles, “particularly regarding user safety, liability in the event of an accident and ethical standards related to the deployment of such technologies.”

In closing, the LCGB stated: “Innovation should not come at the cost of job losses. As such, the LCGB calls on the government and the companies involved to engage in constructive social dialogue to ensure a fair and equitable technological transition.”
