The cultural centre Opderschmelz has announced two Celtic-inspired bands’ arrival in Luxembourg, set to perform at Kantin in Dudelange on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 May 2024.
“The Paperboys”, a globe-trotting sextet that performs Celtic reels, traditional Mexican folk, fiddle tunes, New Orleans brass band music, classic pop songs, bluegrass and even the odd philosophical waltz in a single set. This versatile group, sometimes referred to as the "Los Lobos of Canada", has played an estimated 4,300 concerts since its formation in 1993. At the heart of The Paperboys is a trio of songwriters and musicians: founder Tom Landa, a fedora-wearing singer, guitarist and bandleader who immigrated to Canada from Mexico as a teenager; Kalissa Landa, a lifelong violinist and singer with a “preternatural” sense of melody; and Spirit of the West flautist, guitarist and singer Geoffrey Kelly, who was already a name on the Canadian music scene when he boarded the Paperboys bus in 1997.
This performance will take place on Thursday 2 May 2024 at 21:00, with doors opening from 18:00. Entry is free.
“The Outside Track”, a “refreshingly different” quintet made up of fiddle (Mairi Rankin), harp (Ailie Robertson), accordion (Fiona Black), flutes (Teresa Horgan) and guitar (Michael Ferrie), met while its members were studying folk and world music at the University of Limerick. The organisers noted that this unique degree programme acts like a magnet for young musicians from all over the world, which explains why three Celtic nations are represented in this group: Ireland, Scotland and Canada. The sound of this band is congruently diverse. They reportedly put an innovative spin on traditional Celtic themes. It is a look at traditional playing styles from the perspective of world music. They also play their own compositions.
This performance will take place on Friday 3 May 2024 at 21:00, with doors opening at 18:00. Entry is free.
