A sequel to The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), this new film could have played safe and used all the old characters, special effects and storylines. But this is not just a sequel, it is the next stage in the evolution of The Matrix story, particularly as Neo and Trinity have been resurrected...

Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is an acclaimed inventor of highly-successful video games in "The Matrix" series. His boss / partner, Smith (Jonathan Groff), is the business brains behind them and is now tasking Neo to come up with the next release (M IV). But Thomas (Neo in another reality) is tired, he is on medication and he sees a shrink (Neil Patrick Harris).

He meets Tiffany/Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) in a coffee shop close to his office in a high-rise office building and get to talk with her. She seems familiar to him, but he doesn't remember.

Meanwhile, in another reality, Bugs (Jessica Henwick) and others need Neo's help. His actions are legendary and he is needed. The alternative-reality world has seen peace (as predicted in earlier films) but not before machines / robot sentinels started attacking each other. Io is now at risk

While not necessarily innovative, the time-shifting (slo-mo bullets), shape-shifting and action scenes are well done but no longer exude the "wow factor". Morpheus makes an appearance / return in Resurrections, a mind-puzzle of a film that will have both the critics and audience divided.

Currently screening at Kinepolis in Luxembourg.
