On Monday 26 October 2026, Luxembourg nature conservation NGO natur&ëmwelt asbl announced the Goldcrest as Bird of the Year 2027.

The Bird of the Year is normally selected by ornithologists but for 2027 the Goldcrest, or “Dommendéck” as it is known in Luxembourgish, was selected as part of an online vote organised by natur&ëmwelt.

The vote saw three species shortlisted for selection with the Goldcrest selected alongside the Tree Sparrow and the Great Crested Grebe.

From the tip of its head to the end of its tail, the Goldcrest measures just under nine centimetres. Weighing only five grams, it is a true lightweight, constantly on the move as it searches the branches for food.

Natur&ëmwelt said: “Despite its tiny body, it has a surprisingly powerful voice. Its high-pitched, piercing calls are its trademark, as it tends to remain hidden among the treetops and is recognisable by its yellow-orange crown... What it needs is healthy mixed woodland, a cause that natur&ëmwelt will be particularly committed to supporting over the coming year.”
