On Wednesday 13 May 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) issued a statement notifying the public that, in the coming weeks, the larvae of the oak processionary moth (“Eichenprozessionsspinner”) will enter their caterpillar development phase, during which this species presents an increased risk to human and animal health.
Living exclusively on oak trees, the oak processionary moth may appear in parks and forests. The VdL recommends that walkers and visitors to forests, parks and playgrounds exercise particular vigilance in order to limit health risks.
The VdL stressed that while this species can cause significant damage to trees by consuming their foliage, its effects on health should not be underestimated. The caterpillars are covered with numerous microscopic urticating hairs, which may be carried over long distances by air currents, particularly in hot and dry weather. In the event of contact with human or animal skin, these hairs may cause inflammation and/or severe skin irritation.
As a precautionary measure, the VdL will install warning signs for residents. It is recommended to keep a safe distance from affected trees and not to touch caterpillar nests, the caterpillars themselves, their moults or infested trees. The City of Luxembourg Forestry and Parks Services will shortly proceed with the removal of nests present in the affected trees.
The VdL asks that residents report the presence of oak processionary moths within the territory of the City of Luxembourg by email: parcs@vdl.lu / patrimoinenaturel@vdl.lu, by telephone: 4796 3423 (Parks Service), or via the Report-it system or via the cityapp - VDL.
