From Thursday 20 to Sunday 30 March 2025, the international Pesticide Action Week (Semaine Sans Pesticides) will take place, with Luxembourg hosting the event for the 14th consecutive year through the national campaign "Ouni Pestiziden".
According to the organisers, a study conducted in three German federal states found that 75% of flying insect biomass have disappeared over the past 25 years. Given that these insects are a primary food source for birds and play a key role as pollinators for many wild plants, the scale of the problem becomes evident. The economic costs resulting from ecosystem disruptions are estimated at several billion euros, the Ouni Pestiziden statement noted.
The Ouni Pestiziden campaign, which provides year-round public awareness on pesticides and biodiversity through participation in festivals, events and its website, is organising a contest this year. During pesticide-free week, participants will have the opportunity to test their knowledge about pesticides and their alternatives and win prizes such as nesting boxes, local products, books, seeds and more.
