On Monday 17 February 2025, the Votum Klima platform marked Earth Overshoot Day for Luxembourg with a video directed at Luxembourg’s citizens and decision makers.

Earth Overshoot Day for Luxembourg is the day of the year where all planetary resources for that year would be exhausted if all of humanity consumed at the same rate as the people in the Grand Duchy. To mark the day, Votum Klima released a parody video on behalf of the “Government of the Grand-Excess of Luxe-en-Bourg” (Gouvernement du Grand-Excès du Luxe-en-Bourg), with the aim of congratulating Luxembourg’s citizens and economic players on the country’s overconsumption.

Their message, as detailed in the video, aims to question the priorities of Luxembourg society by highlighting the environmental issues which are regarded as detrimental, such as over-urbanisation and continued construction works, as well as the increasing number of night-time flights from Luxembourg Airport.

While Qatar still holds first place in the Earth Overshoot Day ranking this year, Luxembourg has been following closely since 2006, a statistic Votum Klima said signals the need for an urgent reaction.

Votum Klima has called on political and economic decision-makers to: “Think and act beyond the credo of growth and the sacrifices it imposes on humans and the Earth. Far from being a source of national pride, this year’s Overshoot Day should be an electroshock pushing us to act for a more sober lifestyle that respects our planetary limits.”

Votum Klima is a platform which brings together 23 Luxembourg non-governmental organisations in an effort to turn around Luxembourg's climate and energy policies. Their campaign video can be viewed at: https://cloud.cell.lu/s/MZLLFpicTcbs4cb
