On Wednesday 7 August 2024, Luxembourg's Water Management Authority announced that swimming is once again permitted in the Weiswampach lakes.

A swimming ban had been put in place on 31 July 2024 due to the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), but the alert has now been lifted.

With the situation now back to "normal", swimming and recreational and sporting activities are once again permitted in these areas.

The Water Management Authority added that it had observed a sharp decline in the biomass of cyanobacteria and that the monitoring carried out by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) confirmed the dissipation of the blooms. This development thus puts an end to the alert on toxic risks for public health linked to the presence of cyanobacteria blooms.

The current status (open/closed) of official bathing sites can be followed on the website of the Water Management Authority: www.waasser.lu.
