According to the latest figures from Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice and STATEC, 369 companies were declared bankrupt and 20 were liquidated during the fourth quarter of 2025; a total of 1,187 bankruptcies were declared over the year.

Bankruptcies

In 2025, Luxembourg recorded 1,187 bankruptcies, representing a 2.4% increase compared to 2024 (1,159 bankruptcies). The number of bankruptcies among companies with at least one employee remained stable compared to the previous year (563 bankruptcies), while that of bankruptcies among companies with more than ten employees decreased by 20%.

Across different branches of activity, excluding holding companies and investment funds, contrasting trends emerged. While the number of bankruptcies decreased in the construction sector by 32 cases (-16%), it increased in retail by 25 cases (+15%), in specialised, scientific and technical activities by twelve cases (+12%) and in the hotel, restaurant and café (Horeca) industry by nine cases (+8%).

In 2025, bankruptcies resulted in 3,109 potential job losses. Compared with 2024, potential job losses linked to bankruptcies fell by 3.5%. While these figures remain provisional, they suggest that the situation stabilised in 2025. The sectors most affected were construction, with 973 job losses (-22%), administrative and support service activities, with 547 losses (+140%), the Horeca sector, with 501 losses (-8%), and trade, with 397 losses (-13%).

Liquidations

Luxembourg courts ordered the liquidation of 149 companies in 2025, representing a 45% increase compared with 2024 (103 cases). According to the STATEC, the significant decrease in liquidations observed from 2023 onwards is structural and results from the law of 28 October 2022, which introduced a procedure for administrative dissolution without liquidation. This measure aims to simplify procedures for companies without assets or employees ("shell companies").

As in previous years, the largest number of companies liquidated in 2025 were holding companies and investment funds (38% of cases).

STATEC noted that the bankruptcy statistics are based on court decisions recorded in the Commercial Register, with the most recent data dating from Monday 12 January 2026.The number of bankruptcies is calculated as the sum of "openings" or "reopenings" minus bankruptcies reported in the judicial procedure ("judgments and declarations of bankruptcy"). These figures remain provisional.
