On the occasion of World AIDS Day on 1 December 2015, the Opderschmelz cultural centre in Dudelange will be holding a performance of 'Le Frigo' by Copi.
Following its creation in the Théâtre des Capucins in 2013 and its first revival at the Théâtre de Thionville the following year, 'Le Frigo' will now make a reappearance in Luxembourg, directed by François Baldassare and interpreted by Julian Turgis.
'Le Frigo' is the work of Buenos Aires-born Raul Damonte Botana, who went by the nom de plume Copi. He played le Frigo in Paris in 1983 in his final stage appearance before passing away from AIDS in 1987.
In the play, AIDS is only referenced once, referred to as the 'gay cancer'. Instead of collapsing into pathos, the character transforms himself and is reborn with a strange brilliance, his final moments hours in which life must be lived intensely. The result is a frightening and joyous medley, one last blast of innocence, of vices, and of naivety in the face of an untimely maturity.
