Horesca, the national federation of hoteliers and restaurateurs, has requested an extension to the midnight closing time for restaurants and bars in Luxembourg.

In a press release issued yesterday, Horesca called on the Luxembourg government to allow establishments in the hospitality sector to remain open until 01:00, instead of midnight.

The federation argued that the arrival of colder days no longer provided an optimal setting in which to welcome customers on restaurant and bar terraces. Horesca thus suggested extending the mandatory closing time by one hour in order to ensure maximum safety, providing establishments with more time to better space out the reception of customers.

With the end of the year only a couple of months away, Horesca also proposed that restaurants be able to organise New Year's Eve parties, which would benefit many establishments which have been hard hit by the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The federation added that recognised the need to prioritise health and safety but, in light of stable COVID-19 figures and identified sources of infection in Luxembourg, "an additional opening hour remains reasonable, knowing that we have to live with the virus".
