On Thursday 18 April 2024, Luxembourg’s Minister for Culture, Eric Thill, in the presence of the Hereditary Grand Duke and the Hereditary Grand Duchess, inaugurated the Luxembourg pavilion at the 60th International Contemporary Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
The artist Andrea Mancini with the multidisciplinary collective Every Island, was chosen to represent Luxembourg during this edition of the Biennale and attended this event alongside Joel Valabrega, curator of the Luxembourg pavilion, as well as multiple official and cultural representatives. Minister Thill highlighted the importance of a presence at this Biennale as a powerful means of projecting the creativity of the Luxembourg cultural scene on an international scale, promoting exchanges and contributing to intercultural dialogue.
In his speech, the minister said: “As Minister for Culture, I am particularly proud to open a pavilion which shares values such as collaboration, dialogue and openness, entrusted to a brilliant generation of artists, curators and performers from Luxembourg and various parts of the world. We are delighted to take on the theme of this year's Biennale: Foreigners Everywhere.”
The project entitled A Comparative Dialogue Act was conceived as an infrastructure for the transmission of sound - a shared production space that challenges the entrenched notion of individual artistic authorship. Throughout the Biennale, the pavilion will host four guest artists who will produce and present new sound performances, expanding the definition of a collective work of art.
The international contemporary art exhibition at the Venice Biennale will last from Saturday 20 April until 24 November 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of Culture confirmed.
Since 2018, the Luxembourg pavilion has occupied part of the Sale d'Armi, inside the Arsenal.
The coordination of the Luxembourg presence at the 60th Biennale is entrusted to Kultur | lx, appointed pavilion commissioner since 2022.
