As part of the Esch2022- European Capital of Culture programme, the municipality of Rumlange in the South of Luxembourg has announced the opening of a new experimental creative centre called SPEKTRUM.
The municipailty of Rumalange is also the municipality of the month of the Esch2022 - European Capital of Culture from 22 October to 21 November 2022.
SPEKTRUM is an experimental creative ecosystem for Luxembourg and the Greater Region created in the houses at 14-16A, Rue de la Bruyère in Rumelange, which once belonged to the national sculptor Albert Hames (1910-1989). These houses are also Luxembourg's only preserved studio of late artist Hames and thus classified as a national monument.
The combination of artists' residences and tourist accommodation, SPEKTRUM aims to be an experimental centre for artists, culture enthusiasts, residents and tourists is unique. The centre is intended to be a place for inclusive, joint experimentation and to combine concepts such as co-creation and shareconomy with artistic and cultural practice.
Artistic and creative experiences are to be offered in the building complex of the Albert Hames House and the new extension created under the direction of the architectural office 2001. The new building was conceived to create immersive spaces that constantly reassign functions and uses. The centrepiece of the building complex and inspiration for the open programme is the preserved art workshop of the past sculptor Albert Hames. Both houses will be inaugurated on the weekend of 11 to 13 November 2022 and accessible to the public for the first time.
In addition to the discovery of Albert Hames' studio, visitors can take part in immersive installations, workshops for all ages, performances, sound art, alternative reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, 360 degree films, light symphonies, artistic cooking classes and if desired, take part in creation during the opening programme and beyond.
In addition to the eleven new hostels in the south, which connect all communities through the new 90km Minett Trail, visitors will also be able to be hosted at the Albert Hames House in 2023, in addition to the new accommodation in the Gonner Haus. Guests will not only be able to participate in workshops and art projects offered by artists in residence and other cultural actors, including local and regional cultural associations, but also initiate courses and participatory projects themselves.
SPEKTRUM is an experimental approach rather than a fixed artistic programme and aims to create shared value by drawing on the resources, talents and skills of a wide range of cross-disciplinary participants and actors. The originality of such an approach lies in crossing the multi-layered views and expertise, each giving a reflective testimony in their own language about their discipline, talent, skills, culture and living environment. SPEKTRUM aims to foster the emergence of new process-based artistic forms, formats and practices by promoting inter- and trans disciplinarity.
SPEKTRUM is supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism in addition to Esch2022. The project aims to be recognised as a cultural "third place" and reference for creative tourism on an international level.
