Following the United Nations' adoption of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September, the University of Luxembourg has organised the inaugural edition of Luxembourg October Days for Sustainable Development, to introduce and inform on these Goals.
Organised as part of the '2015 European Year of Development', this first edition two-day event will assemble experts to analyse and measure sustainable development and public policy.
The first day, Tuesday 27 October 2015, will be centered around the theme of 'Measuring Progress Towards Sustainable Development' through a public lecture provided by Walter Radermacher, Director General of Eurostat. The lecture, jointly organised by the University of Luxembourg and the Chambre des Salariés, will be held at 18:30 in the Pétrusse room at the Hotel Parc Belle-Vue, 5 Avenue Marie Therese, L-2132 Luxembourg.
On the following day, Wednesday 28 October 2015, a research forum held at the headquarters of the EIB by the University, the EIB Institute and the Alphonse Weicker Foundation, will seek to understand, measure and analyse the 17 SDGs adopted by the UN General Assembly.
These 17 objectives have as their mission the eradication of poverty, the guarantee of healthy living conditions and the promotion of well-being for all people at all ages, and the reduction of inequalities and creation of effective educational systems. These Sustainable Development Goals will provide a framework for the international community and national governements over the course of the next 15 years.
During the forum, 50 experts will gather to discuss and exchange views on which data to consider for measuring inequalities, on how to measure the impact of policies and act within the EU, and finally how to help developing countries to implement and measure policies geared towards sustainable development.
