The Irish Club of Luxembourg (ICL) has confirmed details of two upcoming events, the Charity Walk and the Guided Tour.
Sunday 22 October 2023 @ 14:00: Charity Walk
The ICL is organising a Charity Walk on Sunday 22 October 2023, in Steinsel, meeting at 14:00.
The walk follows a 6km path through the woods and fields, starting and finishing at the children's "Trim Parcours" adventure playground near the orchards "Les Vergers de Steinsel". The walk includes Roman remains and fields of flowers. It is suitable for dogs and buggies with paved roads most of the way and accessible forest trails. There is parking available for cars at the playground.
To get there: from Steinsel take the Monte Haute; at the T-junction, turn right. The Steinsel Orchards sales hut entrance is on the left. Continue on to the next T-junction and follow the sign for Steinsel. Drive another 500m and the playground will be on your right.
After the walk, attendees will have drinks and nibbles at the playground.
Registration: For those who would like to take part, email Fiona at party@irishclub.lu
Charity: The walk raises money for charity, and this year the ICL is supporting the Simon Community charity in Ireland which supports the homeless (https://www.simon.ie/). Participants are asked to contribute to a charity collection (suggested amount €25, or more if you would like), payable to the ICL at IBAN LU08 0030 2513 4451 0000 (mentioning 2023 Charity Walk and your name(s)).
Saturday 18 November @ 10:15: Guided Tour of Slate Museum
The ICL is organising a Guided Tour (in English) of the Musée de l'Ardoise (Slate Museum) which is situated in Haut-Martelange on the Luxembourg-Belgium border (https://www.ardoise.lu/), followed by a meal in a nearby restaurant.
Last year, a total of seven underground chambers, spread over a length of approximately 350m and a depth of up to 42m underground, were newly opened to allow visitors to discover a new part of the quarry. The underground mine is accessible from the age of 4 years.
Attendees will be going on the shorter two-hour tour during which visitors learn more about the 200-year-old slate industry in Luxembourg and get to see the newly-opened underground chambers. This tour involves a total of 150 steps down, and 150 up, but split into smaller sections.
Attendees are advised to wear sturdy shoes and a warm jacket (constant 9C temperature underground).
Attendees will meet at the Slate Museum (entrance on the CR311 between Rombach-Martelange and Wolwelange) at 10:15 (the guided tour starts at 10:30 sharp), with the meal at 13:00.
Cost: €10/member (€15/non-member); accompanied children (U12) are free-of-charge. Please pay to the ICL at IBAN LU08 0030 2513 4451 0000 (mentioning Slate Museum Guided Tour and your name(s)).
Meal (optional): the ICL will go to Le Mouton Noir brasserie/restaurant in Martelange (see http://www.lemoutonnoir.lu/), just a couple of minutes away by car. Everyone pays for their own food / drinks.
Registration: email party@irishclub.lu with the names of those participating in the Guided Tour, and if you will stay for the meal (the ICL will need to reserve tables in advance).
