The Luxembourg European Association of Performing Arts (LEAPA) has announced two upcoming events: a public reading of short stories and its annual writing competition.

Public Reading

LEAPA is holding an online public reading of the best works of its 2020 short story competition via Zoom on Thursday 4 March 2021 at 19:30. The six winning pieces (two winners and four Coups de Coeur) will be read in full, followed by a number of extracts from works which reached the jury short list. There will be a large number of readers, so not only a variety of writing styles and content, but also a variety of voices will bring the pieces to life.

Attendees are asked to sign in to Zoom five minutes before the meeting to ensure a punctual start. To join the Zoom meeting, sign in to https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83731507539?pwd=aDFCUkR4cW1hc1FZWk8xeHVNQ2hoQT09 with the Meeting ID: 837 3150 7539 and Passcode: Stories.

Writing Competition 2021: Radio Drama "Best Picture Show"

For its 2021 Writing Competition, LEAPA is inviting the public to give free rein to their imaginative talent and to write a short radio drama. There are two categories, each for a complete radio drama of between two and twelve minutes playing time:

- Category 1: a recording (duration 2-12 min.) of a complete radio drama, including all voices and sound effects;
- Category 2: a script (for a duration of playing time of 2-12 min) for a complete radio drama, including detailed descriptions and durations of all sound effects, as well as type of voice(s) if applicable.

The submitted piece(s) should make dramatic sense as an individual entity. Excerpts from longer pieces are not permitted, unless the excerpt makes full sense on its own. The choice of subject is left to the imagination of the author. The deadline is Sunday 6 June 2021.

The best entries in each category will be performed at a public gathering to this effect, pandemic permitting. The reading (or performance, if this is possible) of the Category 2 scripts will be prepared in collaboration with the authors. The competition will be judged by a panel of experienced writers and listeners whose decisions are final. Conditions of entry and submittal requirements are given in the Rules of Competition below. There is no charge for LEAPA members, but non-members are asked to pay €3 for one submission, €5 for two, €7 for three and so on. The fee should be paid via bank transfer to the LEAPA account (BCEE) LU98 0019 4255 8932 5000, stating as communication the title(s) of the submitted piece(s). Entries will be accepted only after confirmation of the transfer.

The address for submission is:

Rules of competition:

- Each entry must be between two and twelve minutes’ playing time. For script entries, the duration of each sound effect must be detailed in order to gauge the length of the entire piece
- There is a maximum of five entries per person
- Closing for submittals is midnight on Sunday 6 June 2021
- Entries are to be submitted in electronic form (PDF for scripted entries, MP3 on memory stick or CD for recorded entries). To ensure anonymity of the authors, all entries must be submitted to LEAPA at competition@leapa.eu or sent to the address above
- The LEAPA competition secretary will then either remove author identification or copy the file into a second unidentifiable file for transmittal to the jury. Only after all entries have been voted on by the jury will the authors be identified to the jury
- The author must not be identified in the document itself (for scripted entries) or during playback of the piece (for recorded entries)
- By submitting an entry, the author expressly agrees to the publication of the author’s name and image, as well the public reading/performance of the author’s work, in the context of LEAPA-organised events. All other rights to publication and broadcast shall be retained by the author. More generally, the author gives LEAPA revocable permission to process the author’s personal data pursuant to European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 of 27 April 2016 and that certain Luxembourg Law of 1 August 2018 adopted pursuant thereto, as the same may be amended.
