The Young Socialists branch of Schifflange has collected clothing and children's toys for beneficiaries of Luxembourg charity Stëmm vun der Strooss.
The eight individuals of the Young Socialists group had previously organised a collection amongst themselves for Stëmm vun der Strooss and this time decided to expand their action to incorporate the whole of Schifflange.
"We researcherd which non-profit to organise a collection for and decided that Stëmm vun der Strooss would benefit the most. they do a lot of good work for people on the streets and we want to support them," explained President of the schifflange Young Socialists, Jerôme Courtois. "We have also been in contact with a local school teacher, to whom we gave some of the toys to distribute to refugee children currently living in Schifflange".
The Young Socialists created a flyer to announce the date of the collection to individuals in the commune with any spare clothes and toys to give away.
"The response was overwhelming," continued Mr. Courtois. "We received enough donations to fill a whole garage! It is comforting to know how much goodwill is out there".
On Thursday 26 October 2015, Mr. Courtois delivered the donations to Stëmm's premises in Hollerich, where they will be sorted, stored and washed before being handed out to people in need. Stëmm vun der Strooss provides support to people in need, including the homeless, refugees, addicts and those living close to the poverty line.
"The support that people give, in terms of donating clothing, food, money or their time through all kinds of initiatives, always touches my heart," commented Alexandra Oxacelay, Director of Stëmm vun der Strooss. "Never underestimate the good that can be done on a small scale, at a local level!"
