On Thursday 29 October 2015, the 'Le Paradis des Enfants' creche in Contern awarded a cheque for €1,832 to Eva-Maria Schmid of SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde.
The funds were raised for the SOS Jardin d'Enfants programme in Dosso, Niger, through an unusual project from the creche entitled 'Tour du Monde' ('World Tour').
As the creche hosts children of 18 different nationalities, the idea was born to help the children discover different countries and their cultures. To this end, over the course of several months, a new country was presented to the children each week with the help of parents.
The children became familiar with various traditions and customs through recreational and culinary activities, with workshops allowing them to create small arts and crafts which were later displayed during an exhibition held at a party marking the end of the school year. The sale of these objects garnered the significant sum of €1,832 which will contribute to the SOS Jardian d'Enfants in Niger which opened five years ago and which hosts around sixty children.
This SOS Villages d'Enfants action began in Niger at the end of the 1980s, with the first SOS Village d'Enfants opened in the capital Niamey in 1993. This was followed by further establishments in Tahoua and Dosso. Today, SOS Villages d'Enfants supports more than 4,500 children, adolescents and adults through various programmes on offer tackling the areas of family care, education, health and social action. An additional assistance project currently helps thousands of refugee children in Nigeria and their host families in the Diffa region.
At the cheque ceremony, Eva-Maria Schmid of SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde thanked the creche team, the children and their parents for the solidarity they had shown through the fund-raising initiative.
SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde will be holding its 40th Christmas Gala on Thursday 10 December 2015 at the Grand Auditorium of the Philharmonie.
