On Wednesday 13 November 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees and Dräieck Asbl held a press conference to present details of the Wanteraktioun (Winter Action) initiative.
The facility at Beim Haff in Findel comprises two buildings that provide accommodation for up to circa 300 homeless people over the winter months from mid-November to mid-April. The temporary accommodation has washing facilities, including showers, and it also offers meals during the daytime. In addition, it also provides health services.
Minister Max Hahn addressed the event which also included representatives of three partner organisations: Inter-Actions, HUT ASBL and the Croix-Rouge (Luxembourg Red Cross). He then led a group through the facility, initially to the reception area, the sanitary facilities, a living area for socialising which was in the process of being prepared, the dormitory halls packed with bunk beds ready made up with welcome packs (towels, tissues, toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, shower gel) on each bed.
The minister then led the group into a separate dining area which was being used by staff, both professionals and volunteers who work alongside each other seven days/week to support the homeless and vulnerable members of society.
This facility is operated free of charge for those in need and helps shield the homeless from the cold and wet of the winter months.
The day centre is open from 12:00 - 16:00 and the night service from 19:00 - 11:00 the following morning.
