Stëmm vun der Strooss, a local non-profit organisation which supports people experiencing homelessness and vulnerable members of society, has reported that the Auchan Luxembourg hypermarket organised a food collection resulting in 2,019 kg of food for the charity’s benefit.

The organisation, based in Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck and Schoenfels, received more than 11,000 disadvantaged people in 2023, including homeless people, alcoholics, drug addicts, the long-term unemployed, young people in difficulty, individuals with mental illness and asylum seekers.

"In view of the rapid rise in poverty, we as a company have a social responsibility that is particularly close to our hearts," emphasised Mathias Santerre, manager of the Auchan branch in Kirchberg. He aimed to ensure that this campaign was not just a one-shot, the association noted. By opening the doors of his shop for twelve hours to the 20 volunteers who had come to help the Stëmm vun der Strooss, the message from the Director of Auchan Kirchberg was: "Not everyone has the luxury of being able to eat every day in Luxembourg. That's why we took World Hunger Day as an opportunity to launch a large collection of tinned food, pasta, rice, oils, vinegar, sweets, biscuits, jams, rusks and pastries."

This World Hunger Day food collection also took place in the Auchan hypermarkets in Differdange and Cloche d'Or, with a total of 2,019 kg of food collected. (Kirchberg: 1,658 kg; Cloche d'Or: 291 kg; Differdange: 70 kg).

For Alexandra Oxacelay, Director of Stëmm vun der Strooss: "Auchan is a pioneer in its CSR approach, corporate social responsibility, because they managed to unite 20 volunteers around this event, coming in particular from high schools, from banks such as State Street Bank or even private individuals who are committed to the good cause."

Thanks to this partnership, which has been in place since 2009, a total of 189 tonnes of food was collected, processed and distributed free of charge to those most in need last year, Stëmm vun der Strooss concluded.
