From 16 to 21 September 2019, UNICEF launched a fundraising initiative at the Belle Etoile shopping centre for the benefit of children in Malawi.
Thanks to this initiative, Belle Etoile visitors and customers bought a total of 800 bricks at €5 each to build a symbolic school. The initiative raised €4,000, which was then doubled by Belle Etoile for a total sum of €8,000. The sum will go towards building "living schools" for children in Malawi.
Living schools provide opportunities for students to access quality education and show them how to use the resources of one of the world's poorest countries in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The institutions thus teach children how to structure their futures in a sustainable and independent way. They feature a drinking water and hygiene system and a school garden to protect the environment and learn the basics of gardening. The schools are also powered by the sun as a stable and ecological energy source.
To further support the education of girls and boys in Malawi and to provide them with clean water, plants and equipment for classrooms, the public can make an online donation at unicef.lu/malawi or transfer their donation to the bank account CCPL LU71 1111 2144 2050 0000, citing "MALAWI". A €40 donation provides drinking water for five children, whilst €66 provides plants for the garden and the school enclosure. €140 is enough to provide school desks for the children.
