The winners of the tenth edition of the Luxembourg Art Prize (LAP), organised by the Pinacothèque private art museum, have been unveiled.
The independent jury has selected the following three winners:
1st prize (€20,000): Azim F. Becker (Germany)
2nd prize (€10,000): Burcu Perçin (Turkey)
3rd prize (€5,000): Stefan Osnowski (Germany & Portugal)
The winners are free to spend the prize money as they see fit.
Azim F. Becker was born in 1991 in Germany. He currently lives and works in Osnabrück (Lower Saxony) in Germany. The artists who inspire him are Erwin Wurm, Marina Abramović, Ron Mueck, Wes Anderson, Thomas Rentmeister and Sam Jinks.
"I work with the intensity of the present moment; my sculptures emerge from reality, though they are timeless and often surreal. Through works like 'Sprout'n Prop', I aim to capture the effort of growth and liberation," the first prize winner explained. "As a dark-skinned artist, I question how skin colours influence our perception and whether my works automatically convey a political message. My approach remains open, allowing each viewer to project their own reality".
Speaking about his winning piece, "Cozy" (2024, silicone, textile, 47x60x70 cm), he said "the ambiguity between comfort and tension invites everyone to explore their own emotions and inner reflections".
The Pinacothèque museum received a total of 503 applications for the 2024 edition.
